With Facebook and Twitter we are getting worse and worse about updating news on this blog\news site. So we're trying to cram a lot of memories into a short paragraph here. Since our last post which was about Park Hill High School (which was consequently our first tour stop) we've had highs and lows but all in all it's been a blast!
So here's a quick run down of what's gone on since Park Hill: - We rocked Abilene, KS - Our truck had some issues and we had to take it in...ouch that bill hurt! - As soon as the truck was fixed we drove to Decorah, IA. Saw some amazing scenery and checked out a Laura Ingalls Wilder museum in Burr Oak, IA. Played Northeast Iowa Community College in Calmar, IA and The Coliseum in Oelwein, IA. - Drove all the way down to Marlow, OK. Had a blast with Jeremy Witt and Crew! - Made our way to "the Four Corners" Farmington, NM. The Moore's and the Fine's...some of the most beautiful people in the world! Life long friends for sure! - Crazy 15 hour drive from Farmington, NM to Kingsland, TX...went through Roswell, NM and definitely saw some "aliens" :) - Great events in Kingsland, TX...great friends, great food, and stayed with the Thomsens who are more family to us really! - San Antonio...wow! The Broadfield's are awesome people and their kids are amazing! - Another grueling 16 hour drive...this time from San Antonio, TX to Omaha, NE - The very next morning we are up at 6:00AM to get ready for Calvary West Omaha. These people ROCK!! Taught us to play "Ninja"...sweet game that we still play with our kids :) John and Lois...we will definitely be coming back through to visit with y'all! - That evening a home concert in Elkhorn, NE...sweet, sweet people that opened their home and we had an awesome turnout!
As you can see we've met some great people along the way. It seems every stop is hard to leave because we meet someone new that we connect with. Cool thing is we have "family" all over the country now :)
That's all for now...if you want more pictures and such check us out on Facebook. There's a link to our Facebook page at the bottom of www.neelymusic.com
Well to give you a little back story. My job (this is Jeremy typing) dissolved at the end of January 2010. Yeah I was told is was economic and that I had a skill set that would enable me to find work or start my own business...blah, blah, blah. Anyways one good thing came out of it...time. Time to book, time to work on music, time to be with my family, time to do a whole slug of things but what it has given us time to do is something we've never been able to do with consistency...TOUR!!!
So we started off our Spring 2010 Tour at Park Hill High School in Park Hill, MO. You never really know what to expect when strolling into a High School. I mean they can love you or hate you...they can spot a phony a mile away and make them pay dearly for it.
To rack up the nerves just a bit we walked into the auditorium...yeah look at this thing. Yeah we've played bigger venues before but the promoter is also telling us that they are expecting it to be packed and we've already told you about our fear of being able to win the High School crowd. Anyways, we did the usual walking the stage to get familiar with it, make it ours, to own it. All-in-all we were excited to kick off our tour in such a stinking sweet auditorium!
Let me just quickly state, this isn't exactly common and we don't always get to roll like this. So the next thing that happens is the promoter takes us into our dressing room. Yes I said it our own personal dressing room with our own bathroom. Sweetness :) Granted the pictures don't look the greatest because one I took it with my iPhone and I was taking a picture of our reflection in the mirror. So the absolute coolest part of the evening was when we finally got to meet the audience. Jason Parr, the promoter, introduces us and the crowd goes nuts...yeah that is a GREAT sign!
I wish I would have had my video camera on so you could see and hear that as we walked out on stage. It was pretty stinking sweet! But those crazies at Park Hill did pose for a photo so y'all could see what we see. Right after our first song I asked them if it was cool if we took a picture to post on the Internet...they went nuts...I took that as a yes! So here it is...when we're up there on stage this is what the view looks like from the drivers seat :) Really from the bottom of our heart...Thank you Park Hill High School! Thanks for taking a chance on us, Thanks for the welcome, Thanks for rocking with us...Thanks for everything! We hope to see y'all again very soon!
We know that you get hit from every direction these days by all of us wanna be musicians, who have found a way to put our greatest hits on iTunes and the like, asking you to head out to iTunes, Rhapsody, Napster, or wherever and buy our music. Why the urgency? Why the push? Who cares?
It's one of those things where us musicians really do little to tell you how much that $.99 (or less) download means to us. After all, if we know the importance of it surely the listener does! Or not. Here's a few reasons we beg so hard for downloads and these are not in any particular order of importance.
- For NEELY the total cost of our recording project, at the end of 2009, when we finally have a 10 song CD in hand ready to sell...it will have cost us somewhere in the neighborhood of $15,000 - $20,000 to produce. A side note...this is inexpensive for the level of recording we are doing! The bottom line is most album budgets run from $5,000 (for those just starting out with a tight budget) all the way up to $75,000 (for those with great sponsors who can afford the big name producers). Granted, a $.99 download doesn't go a long way especially since any way you skin it an Independent Artists receives at best 91% of that but most likely it's around 66%.
- Every download or stream is tracked by Sound Scan. OK, so there's more to it than what I'm going to say here but the gist is this: Record labels want to "hire" (give a recording contract to) people that are making money. Gone are the days when they develop a talented person, who has the look and potential to become something big. They want someone who's already out there doing it. One who has a following, one who is making money in this business. Sound Scan provides information that helps them to find these people. If an Independent Artist is out there getting as many downloads as Nickleback per week...better bet a Record Company, a Booking Company, Radio, Publisher...these guys are going to want in on this and capitalize because they have the machine in place to do so!
- Spreading the news. OK, this one is risky but we're living testimony of this and here's an example. Recently our friend sent out a notification that her boyfriend's band, The Rust, just released their album on iTunes. Because we are friends with Nick James, the boyfriend and leader of The rust, we downloaded the album. Wow! It was awesome and we told everyone about it. Actually we are STILL telling people about it! However, if we would not have taken the chance we would have never known and neither would anyone else. Don't just download something blindly, listen to the clips or listen to the full length stream (Rhapsody and others offer this service)...this still makes the artist money by the way).
Yeah these points were dumbed down a bit. Partially because there is nearly 10 years of stuff floating in my head and I could never get it all out but also because this business is so complex there are things I still don't grasp (actually a lot of things!). Just know that listening and downloading our songs means the world to us and we are SO appreciative. If not for the 3 points above, just because you cared enough about us to go out and do it. After all we are bearing our soul in our music and everyone likes to be accepted!
Thanks again to all of you that make two small town kid's dreams come true on a daily basis! Y'all ROCK!!
Jeremy & Kaci
P.S. - shameless plug. Here are links to NEELY's debut album "Everything I Am". Enjoy!

We are pumped to announce that for the month of February we are in a competition called "Next Big Thing" on Alternative Addiciton (http://www.alternativeaddiction.com)! Our good friends, The Rust (now called Throwing Gravity) were also entered in this contest last year so we're in good company!
So please click on the banner below and head out to vote often! Y'all are the reason we've made it this far and you're the reason we'll go higher!!!
Please get a team of friends and family to get out there and vote...we need y'all in a big way here! Thanks again for all you do to make the dreams of two small town kids come true!
So house hunting wasn't exactly going good to say the least. For a late lunch break we stopped by and saw Todd, Tom, and Brett at Zodlounge Music Productions. Jokingly Brett mentions, "ah yeah that house don't have a roof...and it's built on and IBG" (IBG we find later is Brett's abbreviation for Indian Burial Ground).
Why does this story have revelance? Well as we turn on the street to this particular property we find this right on the corner:
Not really a IBG but it got a good stinking laugh! What really got us laughing our butts off was pulling into the property and seeing a big blue tarp over the roof...yeah a flipping big gaping hole! At this point it was getting dark and we were way out in the boonies so before anything else went down we decided we better get back to civilization.
Sad story is...still no home. Upswing is we have some good prospects.

January Monday 11, 2010 Home shopping for the starving artist and getting mugged at the Bluebird Cafe
We're in Nashville this week looking for homes. Yeah...if you haven't heard yet, we're moving to Music City USA to chase the dream! I pretty much rank looking for places to live right up there with watching grass grow or waiting on paint to dry. So here's a little clip of us driving around the greater Nashville area looking at homes for sale and\or a place to rent.
As is the case with any trip involving NEELY there was some excitement on the home shopping excursion. In an attempt to be one of the lucky few that goes around bragging that we found that one "fixer upper" that was grossly undervalued...well we ended up in some section 8 type apartment area with gang bangers and drug deals all around us. Pretty sure we had "outsiders" written all over us! So what does one do after a long day of home shopping (no not drink ourselves silly, we don't roll like that!) We cruise over to Hilsboro Pike and visit the legendary Bluebird Cafe so we can participate in the Monday Night Open Mic. On our way in we get hit up by a competitor of The Bluebird who later trys to sweet talk us into playing their Open Mic...perhaps later Sir!
That's all the excitement we can handle for the day. Now we're back in the hotel and...oh geesh food network is doing a piece on Taco Bell...well, we gotta make a run for the border!!!

September Tuesday 22, 2009 KS State Fair - got my Pronto Pup (banquet on a stick)
This past Saturday (Sept 19th) we had the opportunity to play two shows at the Kansas State Fair. We played a full out ROCK show at the Alltel Arena for our first set then went to graze on some of the great food (I got a Pronto Pup and a Roasted Corn) of the State Fair before banging out an acoustic show at the Lake Talbot stage.
It was pretty exciting to see the crowds that came to see us but even moreso it was exciting to see the people filing in once we cranked up each set! Then during a few songs we'd see people whipping out video cameras and cell phones to capture the moment...that was probably one of the greatest compliments we've ever received!
It was a sweet experience and we were complete boneheads and didn't get any video or pictures for you. From what the promoter said though...there will be a next time!

June Wednesday 03, 2009 Sunday, May 31st - Wichita, KS
Once we hit Green Bay our weekend was like one long run on sentence. We played Cup O' Joy Friday night, hit the sack, and up loading bright and early Saturday morning. Steve Pipp got up at the crack of dawn to cook us an Ah-Mazing breakfast...yeah, the Pipp's flat out spoiled us rotten!!! Then we were on the road by 9:15 or so.
I know you'll think we sound like freaks here, but we had a blast in the van on the trip from Green Bay, WI to Salina, KS. The girls were hilarious! Logging what truckers would honk and what state they were from (see the previous post for a picture and more details). We got home at 12:30 AM, unloaded, then loaded up amps, wireless racks, and such for Wichita. Hit the sack at 1:30 AM then wide awake at 5:30 AM...yeah, sometimes life on the road isn't too glamorous. It's always hard work!
Thankfully the promoters of "At The Corner" (The event we played in Wichita) had a trailer for us and after load in\sound check Kaci and I crashed for a bit.
It was HOT...the deck was black and the whole show it felt like my feet were literally cooking in my shoes. Kaci did a fabulous job, but I have to admit I was so exhausted that I was having some pitch problems vocally. I just couldn't control it as much as I like too...of course I'm a perfectionist!
Anyways this picture shows the stage...we were right out in the open. The sound rig flipping rocked (thank you Josh and Andy from Sound Kingdom!!!).
Although there were between 500 - 700 people in attendance, only a few dared to come out in the open near the stage. Everyone else played it safe back in the shade which was well behind the sound tent (note the sound tent was a good 30 - 40 yards from the stage). It was funny because you could tell, even from a distance, that people were grooving and getting into the show...they just weren't going to bake in the heat! We don't blame them one stinking bit either!!!
Sorry it took so long to post all this stuff. Without a constant Internet connection and that precious commodity called "time" we just couldn't really keep up the blog real time. We'll try to do better in the future, but until we have a Road Manager and Techs that do all the leg work...don't count on it!
Thanks for all you do to make two small town kid's dreams come true!!!
All I can say about the drive to Green Bay is WOW! It was absolutely beautiful! While driving up US 151 I thought at times I was in the Shire. Of course we didn't get any of those pictures. We did get a snap of Lambeau Field and some good shots from Cup O' Joy.
I'm dissapointed I forgot to do a video blog showing off the cup...the back stage area where the dressing room and green room were stinking nice(A green room is for artists to relax and chill out, kinda feel at home)!! There's a reason for that though. Cup O' Joy hosts some pretty big ticket artists...the cool thing is, they all come for the mystique of playing at "The Cup" and the audience actually chips in to show the love.
Here's a string of photos from Green Bay...
The home of the Green Bay Packers...Lambeau Field.
It was a cool artsy fartsy shot taken by Jordan Lambert so get off my back!
Cup O' Joy has some of the best sound, lighting, and video equipment in the region!
That blur is the lightning quick hands of a studly guitar player...or it's just because the camera didn't handle the lighting so well. Dang it!
We're on the stinking Jumbotron!!! Well I guess it's not exactly Jumbo, but people in the back could watch us on the big screen up in the corner. That's got to count for something doesn't it?!?!
I can't tell if the lighting in this picture helps show there was a lot of people there or if it makes it look like the place is abandoned. Trust me it was a pretty big crowd...we were very impressed with the attendance!
Steve Pipp and his wife Paula were so kind as to open their house to us. All the girls loved Steve and Paula but Emma especially loved her new friend Steve. They played Candy Land, Air Hockey, and all kinds of cool stuff!
The girls found out that if you pump your arm up and down when passing a trucker that most likely they'll honk. With a 15 hour trip from Green Bay to Salina so we can play a show on Sunday, May 30th...it definitley passes the time! I think they even charted out what drivers honked and what state they were from. If you are a trucker from Indiana and are reading this, lighten up and flipping honk for the kids!!!

June Tuesday 02, 2009 Thursday the 28th we were in Oelwein, IA - The Coliseum
Thursday, May 28th was by far the shortest leg on the tour and we were heading to Oelwein, IA (pronounced Ol-win as I was told by the locals). The place we were playing was a classic venue called The Coliseum. The Coliseum was under renovation so we basically set the sound system up on the floor and played an "in the round" type of acoustic show with Michael Reed, Adam Humburg, and our good friend Mitch McVicker.
The history is rich at The Coliseum. Oelwein was once the hub of all rail traffic between Minneapolis, St. Louis, and Chicago with a huge engine repair business going in a rail yard that spans the whole length of the town. With times booming, back in the day, The Coliseum hosted big band legends like Lawrence Welk, Bob Wills, and countless others that shaped the music soundscape of that generation.
Here's a few shots from Night of Acoustics at The Coliseum in Oelwein, IA:
Michael Reed rocking "The Foot Song"...yeah it's as weird as it sounds! He's awesome though, we love Michael!
This is Adam Humburg and his lovely wife. She's sitting on the edge of her seat ready to run after the kids!
The not so glamorous truth as to why Kaci isn't in this picture is that Ella Mae pee-pee'd in her pants. Mitch was needing to get on the road, so we took a group picture while Kaci was at the hotel dealing with pissy pants.
This is pretty much the same picture with the promoters of Night of Acoustics (Michael Decher and Justin Herrick).
As the sun was setting Kaci got some really cool pictures of the kids as the sunrays flooded The Colesium. Here's Ella Mae with two of her new friends.

June Tuesday 02, 2009 Wed the 27th we played Mars Cafe - Des Moines, IA
Don't expect the big Theaters like you've seen in past videos and blogs, this was a small acoustic tour of just Kaci, Jeremy, and his guitar. BUT the venues we played on this tour absolutely ROCKED each in their own individual way. Enter, Mars Cafe right down by Drake University in Des Moines, IA. This place was happening. A combination of Restaurante, Bar, and Coffee Shop...with some cool decor, it was sweet!
The picture was taken while they were closing down so it doesn't look like it's too busy...this video isn't much better as it was near closing time, we had played, tore the equipment down, and eveyone had left...but you can see the cool interior of Mars Cafe.
Outside of the general business of Mars Cafe and the fact that we got lost (Google Maps actually gave us the wrong directions!) we played a tight set and won the crowd over. We found out later that some were checking out our website while we were playing...they came up and said, "Your web store is blank. Do you have any CDs or anything for sale?" That's stinking cool!

June Monday 01, 2009 We will be blogging about our trip through Iowa and Wisconsin soon...
We didn't have much time or the Internet access to blog about our shows in Des Moines, IA, Oelwein, IA, or Green Bay, WI while on the road but we should have some videos and pictures up soon. It was a great trip and we met some wonderful people!!
Check back in the next couple days to see the updates.
FUEL was flat out one of the sweetest venues we've played in a LONG time...just how they remodeled the place, the downtown setting, the acoustics, just the whole shebang. Here's a video of "Tear Stained Pillows" at FUEL:
Here's some pictures of us at FUEL:
Here's a video of us covering "Kryptonite" by 3 Doors Down. Our kids love it when we do this song...you can tell Allison and Aubrey hurried to turn the camera on, put their finger over the mic, and moved to the front of the stage. Cracks me up!
Then there's the trip back home. From the Texas shaped Waffle to The Dam Pub (a nice play on the scene from the movie "Vegas Vacation") which is located near some Dam just east of Llano. We had a lot of fun...even Ronald McDonald would say so...
We wish our blogs could all be real time, but sometimes on the road we don't have access to the Internet and beyond that we were flat BUSY! It was an 11 hour drive to Llano. When we got in Friday night we met with the promoters, got a bite to eat, and then it was of to bed. The next morning was setting up in the park for the first show...it was so hot\humid during the show that Jeremy almost passed out (wuss!)...after that show we loaded up equipment, cooled off in the pool at the hotel and then it was off to FUEL (a local Coffee House) for an acoustic show. It was midnight by the time we were in bed Saturday evening then up early to make the 11 hour drive back to KS on Sunday...the rest was getting back to work and recovering.
Just incase you were wondering if we were really "Deep in the heart of Texas" we did a little throw back to Pee Wee's Big Adventure:
The pictures at the park didn't turn out so well, but here are some pictures from downtown Llano and FUEL:
Next post will show a few photos of us at FUEL and the trip home...

May Thursday 07, 2009 The stars are bright, shine big at night...
Deep in the heart of Texas! That's where we're heading this weekend. We have two shows in Llano, TX on Saturday. One is a full out rock assult in the park from 3:00 - 5:00 and then we turn around and do an acoustic show at FUEL Coffee House at approximately 7:00.
We're going to be pooped, but we're going to be getting some pictures and video to put up here on the blog so you know what it's like to be on the road with NEELY.
We were so busy on the last day at Zodlounge that we really didn't get a good chance to blog. Between wrapping up BGVs and then getting ready for our early morning flight out, it just didn't happen. Then we when we landed in KC we had to run to St. Joseph, MO to pick up our girls...long story short, we were pooped!
Here's one last picture of us at the studio with the guys. These guys have become more than people we do business with, they've become family. We miss Todd, Tom, and Brett dearly!! Shoot, we miss all our Nashville friends. Jodi Cobb and Nick James who always take such good care of us...they're just like the guys at Zod, family. We miss all of you SO much!

May Wednesday 06, 2009 "Falling Down" has moved up to #1...
Thanks to y'all "Falling Down" has become the #1 requested song on Zoo92.com! It's moved ahead of "All Summer Long" by Kid Rock and "Crazy Train" by Ozzy. Talk about a dream come true!
Keep your ears open...we are pushing "Falling Down" out to some regional radio stations and we'll need your help in getting the song played heavily in their rotations. We'll be posting a list of stations here soong...it's probably going to be KS, OK, MO, CO, and NE stations for now but we'll push it to a station in your area if you get us some contact info and will organize a team of "requesters" for us.
Thunderstorms rolled into Tennessee overnight, but it's one of those nice rolling type of storms that make you just want to curl up and take a nap. Not in the cards for us today though. It's another day of BGVs. We knocked out "In The Middle" this morning and then Shawn Sullivan dropped by. Shawn is a road manager (a dang good one). He has worked with tons of artists...anyways, Shawn is a native Kansan so it was cool to make that connection.
There were some comical moments in the vocal area as a group of guys (and Kaci) gathered to do a shouting part on "In The Middle"...we're trying to make it more of an anthem. I'll just let the video do the talking.
Toby and Christa Wells were back in town today to talk to INO Records so we all went out to Five Guys again. Man, they have some amazing food there!
Now we're back in the studio knocking out the BGVs on "Tear Stained Pillows". Then it'll be on to "Everything I Am" and we'll be done with our part. The trip is winding down and things are coming together rather nicely. Next step will be for the guys to add more parts (guitars, synth sounds, etc) then we will review the mixes. Once we are happy with the final mixes it's off to the Mastering Engineer to get all the final tweaking done on the highs, mids, and lows as well as a consistent DB level across all songs that will match other songs being played on the radio.

Talk about sweet! Thanks Brother Ken for believing in us!!

April Thursday 30, 2009 BGVs (Back Ground Vocals) = an uneventful day
Back ground vocals are such an important piece of giving a song texture. Although they provide so much fullness to a song, they usually aren't glamorous nor are they something anyone would want to be caught singing solo.
Today was the first day of Back ground vocals or BGVs and we won't be showing you much today. Before I show you a video of Kaci and Tom talking through background parts for "Move" I'll give you a quick introduction to the man who manages Zodlounge, the one the only Brian Unger (Bunger for short).
Before we did BGVs we went out to eat (of course!) at Royal Thai in Brentwood:
Before lunch we went over all the songs to determine where we plan on putting BGVs and the ideas we have for those areas. After lunch we did BGVs on "You and Me", "I Don't Need You", and "Move". Here's a small peek at the process...
Studios pop up all over the country...everyone with a computer thinks they can install Garage Band or some other recording software and make a number 1 hit. So it goes without saying that there's a lot of people out there that think they can fill the shoes of Tom Michael, believe me...I sat in the chair and I felt the surge of power...but there can be only one!
Beufford had some fun today, but all-in-all Tom was driving the project with the express interest of keeping everyone at Zod safe and sound:
Tomorrow we are doing BGVs on "In The Middle", "Everything I Am", and "Tear Stained Pillows". After that we'll look over everything really close to make sure we are ready to wrap the project up and cram any changes we may have in.

April Thursday 30, 2009 the rest of the Wednesday scoop...
It was a tough day on Wednesday as we got "Move" ready to track. The song is pretty hard to get the instruments tight on the tempo. Tom fought the bass line for quite some time before he wrestled the beast into a pit of defeat...whatever that means.
After fighting the beastly bassline it was time for lunch. We went to an amazing place called Baja Burrito. As we were walking in the guys were waving and chatting it up with people. They brought us over, introduced us to Jeremy and Tiffany Lee and their 3 beautiful children. As we're talking and laughing at Brett, someone says, "Oh yeah, you all might have heard of Tiffany she's known as Plumb". It was a cool moment for us...I was thinking the whole time, "man, Kevin Collings would crap his pants right about now".
Back in the studio Tom shoved me into the vocal booth to get the final lead vocal track in the can. We got some good stuff down and Tom was doing a little mixing on "Move"...as always it's far from the final product but it sounds pretty sweet!
OK, on to get content for Thursday's blog...

We got into a time crunch yesterday afternoon and couldn't finish up blogging about the stuff we were doing to "In The Middle". Before we go into that, Kaci and I wanted to say "hello" to our 4 daughters that we had to leave with my Dad and Mom in Missouri.
Back to "In The Middle"...to start off, here's a peek of me in the vocal booth getting levels on the microphone.
Here's a sample of how the mix is starting to take shape:
Now here's the creepy "can you scream like a cheetah" moment that Tom asked me to do. Don't worry we didn't video the moment just the fruit of our labor.
After recording Jodi and Nick took us downtown and we ate at South Street then went for a walk around downtown. Here's a picture of Kaci and I on the Shelby Street Pedestrian Bridge:
Here's a little video Kaci made about the Shelby Street Bridge:
OK, I'll post this now and then fill you in on the rest of today in another post...

April Tuesday 28, 2009 Recording is free, the Zodblend coffee is DANG expensive
Part of the Zod atmosphere is what we all affectionately refer to as "Zodblend". This rare form of coffee is mined in the caves of South Africa and it flat out ROCKS! Mr. Todd Shay is the CCM (Chief Coffee Maker) at Zodlounge. Here's a little bit about the beloved nectar of life:
Todd's nickname is "Dickman" which was birthed in the creative mind of Brett Vargason. Brett also composed a cartoon image of Dickman...
Enough funny stuff...on to "Tear Stained Pillows". Today we put down the bass line, tracked the lead vocal, and then comped and mixed the vocals. Here's the bass line going down:
Kaci is getting ready to rock out on the vocals for "Tear Stained Pillows":
After Tom got the Bass tracks laid down and somewhat mixed, Kaci went into the vocal booth. Tom did have to trade out microphones to help capture the mood of the song and the way Kaci's voice sounds when she sings "Tear Stained Pillows".
Then there's the comping of all the vocal tracks Kaci put down and the initial mixing:
We also got the main vocals for "In The Middle" done today but I'm out of time and will upload some of those videos tomorrow. There's a part that sound stinking COOL in the song but by itself sound flipping hilarious...check it out tomorrow! Peace out!
